A historic winemaking estate of some 110 hectares, Château de Pierreux is a living monument in the heart of Beaujolais.
Originally a 13th-century stronghold, as attested by the two surviving towers, Château de Pierreux has endured through the ages to reach us in its present form, largely defined by the 19th-century renovation. The 17th-century vaulted cellars recall the scale of this former independent estate: the lake, orchards, vegetable garden, farmyard and vineyards are still in use today.
Spreading out around the château, some of the vines are 70 years old. The estate’s distinctive character owes much to its geological profile, a combination of sedimentary, volcanic and magmatic rock. This diversity, forged at the point where the limestone plateaus of Mâcon meet the granite bedrock of Beaujolais, sculpts wines of great structure and finesse. Since 2009, estate manager Alain Dugoujard has led a gradual conversion to trellised vines (now 47 hectares), focusing on vine balance, canopy management and soil preservation. The estate has been HEV3-certified since 2020.
Unusually for a Beaujolais estate, the wines are aged almost exclusively in large oak tuns of 36 to 95 hl, refining their subtly polished texture.
Brouilly Réserve du Château 2024, songs of the soil
The estate’s flagship cuvée, La Réserve du Château blends Gamay from vines aged 10 to 70 years: over a third from younger trellised vines, the remainder from older goblet-pruned vines. The grapes are destemmed and slowly fermented in concrete vats at 22–28°C, with daily pump-overs, 12 to 18 days of maceration and several rack-and-returns at the end of vatting. Six to eight months of ageing in oak tuns helps to fine-tune the texture and soften the tannins.
Ruby-red colour with hints of purple, violet and spice on the nose, underpinned by ripe dark berries. Dense and silky-smooth on the palate, with blueberry and peony notes elevated by Pierreux’s distinctive mineral touch.
The label echoes the château’s coat of arms, a subtle nod to the elegance of the wine and the place.
