A link between the vine and the
wine
The wine-broker is an independent intermediary, a businessman
registered at the Chamber of Commerce whose job it is to centralise
the supplies from the wine-growers and the demands from clients,
to the satisfaction of both parties.
On a legal level, the wine-broker always buys in the name and
on behalf of his or her dealer/client and never for himself.
He is paid on a commission basis by both parties.
A regimented profession
The wine-broker usually comes from wine-growing or a related
profession (barrel makers, cellar managers etc.). It is a
profession that is traditionally handed down from father to
son. In recent times, however, an official exam at the end
of an internship with a practising broker has become obligatory.
The broker then obtains a professional card that is issued
by the local administration.
Qualities : diplomacy, trust and knowledge
As the broker is a figure of trust for both seller and buyer,
he must be diplomatic, honest and conscientious.
He must also know how to taste wine, have basic oenological
knowledge, master the fundamentals of the cellar manager’s
job and vine geography. A thorough knowledge of business,
banking and accounting is also necessary. |
